Windows (which were overpriced to begin with) had a 20% mark up for overhead and profit putting a vinyl window far and above Anderson Wood New construction pricing.
The bathroom; $55K, no fixtures, no doors, no tile, no carpet with minimal labor and we do the entire demo. Far and above than the $50K we were "easily" going to be able to obtain.
The quote - woah were we ever taken for a ride.
• $1,000 to hang a mirror - mirror not included.
Siding $7.50 + 20% overhead & profit, not to mention they had over 1,000 sq ft more than any other person quoting. They stated they needed to add 10% for loss, which should have been 250 sq ft.
• Not to mention they didn't want to move walls per our request because it was too expensive at $3,000, but we requested it to be part of the scope.
Designer says we can easily do our bathroom for less than $50,000 and save money on top of that by doing things ourselves. $50 was over budget, but he's giving us options and "easily" less than $50. We were excited to see the options.
• $3500 to paint 350 sq ft. - no taping, no mudding just painting, plus 20%.
While we truly appreciate vendors needing to make a profit, we have since had others price the same project and we are successfully getting siding, windows and master bath priced without the 20% mark up. Gates has stated it is because of the multiple trades, they have to build in the 20%, but knowing others can do the multiple trades a lower price without the 20%, I chose not to utilize Gates.
The meeting with the designer, sales man, window expert and siding expert went very well and we were impressed. Everyone at once talking about our options together, as a team.
Our insurance agent suggested Gates General Contractors to us when we needed to replace our roof after a hail storm. They could not have been easier to work with - they met with the insurance company out at the house while we were at work, they managed the whole project without our involvement and kept us informed at all times. The work was done quickly and to a high standard. They were very professional and it was one of the top customer service experiences I've ever had. Highly recommend.

We met Gates at the Minneapolis Home Show. Initial impression was great. They were very honest as we discussed the desire to have our siding and windows replaced. At the Home Show we were quoted our siding $7.50 sq ft installed. We had an initial meeting with the salesman, Luis. He absolutely seemed trust worthy and we liked the discussion we were having regarding siding and windows. I asked him if he did master baths or decks, he said yes. I showed him our master bath which is a very unique design. He stated he'll need the designer to come out as it was to unique for him to give any sorts of estimates, we appreciated the honesty.
